Are We "There" Yet?
Lead: Ceci Albert
Room: Victoria Ballroom North
As a community, we have been studying the issues associated with
developing and maintaining COTS-based systems since the mid 1990s.
Yet, as the marketplace for COTS software grows and expands, few
organizations are realizing the benefits anticipated from using COTS
products (faster development, cheaper maintenance, increased
performance - all based on leveraging continued commercial investment
in products). Join us for a discussion that explores four dimensions of the
work that remains before we can say, "we know everything we need to
effectively develop and maintain COTS system."

Modernizing Legacy Systems Using COTS Components
Lead: Robert Seacord
Room: Victoria Ballroom South
An option for modernizing legacy systems is to replace parts or all of it
with COTS components. One recent experience showed us that it is very
difficult to replace a legacy system with a COTS solution when there is a
high business value in the legacy code. In this experience, the
organization is successfully using COTS infrastructure components to
incrementally modernize their legacy system without affecting system
operation. Join us for a discussion on experiences in modernizing legacy
systems using COTS components and tell us what has worked and what
has not worked for you.
